The Baran Method: Language Arts is a comprehensive three-year middle school curriculum.
Most K–12 language arts programs combine writing, literature, grammar, vocabulary, and related skills into a single course. The Baran Method adopts an approach commonly used in colleges and universities by teaching writing (composition) and language arts as distinct but complementary subjects. This allows students to first learn the writing process before applying that same process across every area of language arts.
As students study literature, nonfiction, research, argument, speech, poetry, and more, The Baran Method: Language Arts builds on the same organized-thinking process taught in The Baran Method: Writing for Success.
Students should learn The Baran Method before beginning this curriculum. The Baran Method: Writing for Success teaches students the organized-thinking and writing process they will apply throughout The Baran Method: Language Arts.
Writing is organized thinking.
Writing is where students learn to organize and communicate their ideas. Once students learn this invaluable skill, they can approach every language arts reading, discussion, writing, and speaking activity with a framework for organizing and communicating their thinking.
Instead of struggling with how to organize and communicate their ideas, students are better prepared to focus on understanding, analyzing, and communicating what they have learned.
A Three-Year Middle School Language Arts Curriculum
One textbook. Three years of language arts instruction.
The Baran Method: Language Arts is designed for grades 6–8 and provides a comprehensive three-year curriculum covering literature, nonfiction, research, argument, speech, poetry, and more.
The Student Textbook contains instruction, readings, examples, activities, assignments, and a suggested three-year pacing guide to help teachers plan instruction across grades 6–8.
Teacher’s Companion and Student Support (Answer Key)
The separate coil-bound Teacher’s Companion and Student Support provides sample responses, writing models, and completed activities to support instruction and make it easy for teachers to review student work.
Starting in 7th or 8th Grade?
Students do not need to begin The Baran Method: Language Arts in sixth grade. The curriculum is organized as a complete three-year course of study because foundational concepts and activities build on one another as students progress through the material. Rather than dividing the curriculum into separate grade-level textbooks, students who begin later can start with the foundational material and move through it at a pace appropriate for their age and abilities.
