The Baran Method: Language Arts

Understanding, Organizing, and Communicating Ideas

The Baran Method: Language Arts is a comprehensive three-year middle school curriculum designed to be used alongside The Baran Method: Writing for Success. Most K–12 language arts programs combine writing, literature, grammar, vocabulary, and related skills into a single course. The Baran Method adopts an approach commonly used in colleges and universities by teaching writing (composition) and language arts as separate but complementary subjects. This allows students to first master the writing process before applying that same process across every area of language arts.

As students study literature, nonfiction, research, argument, and speech, they continue using The Baran Method: Writing for Success and its accompanying workbook throughout the school year. This ongoing writing practice reinforces the thinking and writing skills introduced in Writing for Success while helping students apply them across every area of language arts.

Writing is organized thinking.

Writing is where students learn to organize and communicate their ideas. The same organized thinking students learn through writing is applied throughout language arts. Whether discussing literature, explaining nonfiction, conducting research, writing arguments, or delivering speeches, students rely on the same underlying process: organizing ideas before communicating them.

The Baran Method teaches this process first through writing, then applies it across the rest of language arts. As a result, students approach every reading, discussion, writing, and speaking activity with a framework for organizing and communicating their thinking. Instead of struggling with how to organize and communicate their ideas, students are better prepared to focus on understanding, analyzing, and communicating what they have learned.
