To be clear, we’re not an English Language Arts curriculum; we’re a writing curriculum. Most ELA curriculums do a solid job of teaching writing “mechanics,” but many fall short when it comes to helping kids get their ideas from their heads onto the page. Teaching our kids the structure of writing so that their ideas get on the page in an organized manner (that’s the definition of successful writing) ends the learning-to-write struggle.
There’s a difference between a writing curriculum and a Language Arts curriculum. The Baran Method addresses the disconnect between the two. We believe that you can’t teach language arts to kids who hate to write or won’t write. We’ve found that it’s more effective to first help kids get their great ideas on the page and in the process teach language arts.
